A NEW WAY TO ENJOY THE BEACH AS A COMMUNITY.
A collaborative project accomplished over 6 weeks focusing on closing the loop and creating a sustainable product system.
After a lot of speculation we are now trying to bring about a change in a specific social scenario which in this case is beaches. After a lot of research we have found that most people at beaches do not involve themselves in the social setting, most prefer to play games or read or take photographs on their mobile phones. Thus the brief we set ourselves with is:
"To recreate people's experience at the beach by involving them in a community activity and pulling them away from their mobile devices"
The concept we chose to proceed with is a system of blocks which fit snugly with one another. This enables people to come together and build structures, forms, foundation and sculptures. These blocks would have an additional feature of being buoyant, thus one could create a raft or floating structure to enjoy with one another.
Closing The Loop
As designers it is important to be aware of the impact a certain product has, not just during its life cycle but how that life cycle ends. .
For Beach Blox, we used Ingeo Bio-Polymer for the outer hard shell and Mushroom Material for the inner foam. These materials are Cradle to Cradle certified.
Ingeo Bio-Polymer is bio based carbon polymer which has an extremely efficient manufacturing process which emits 82% lesser greenhouse gasses and uses 52% lesser energy in its production process. It is 100% recyclable and has a NFPA score of 0.
Mushroom Material is bio based alternative to expanded plastic foams. This technology uses mushroom roots to convert agricultural waste to a material which can replace various types of plastic. It is grown sustainably and is 100% bio-degradable.
As important a design is, the way the product is sold is equally important. A good business cycle can enable profits alongside sustainable usage.
Beach Blox will not be a retail product, instead it will be bought in bulk by hotels, beach shops and party rental companies. This will reduce packaging and ensure higher number of blocks being recycled or biodegraded.
